Your Stargazing Base for the Warrumbungles and Siding Spring

Dark skies by night, a comfy bed by morning

Coonabarabran is known as the astronomy capital of Australia, and for good reason. Just out of town sit Warrumbungle National Park – Australia's first Dark Sky Park – and Siding Spring Observatory, home to the country's largest optical telescopes. Acacia Motor Lodge puts you right in the middle of it all, in the centre of town.

Warrumbungle National Park – Australia's first Dark Sky Park

About 35km west of town along Timor Road/John Renshaw Parkway, the Warrumbungles are famous for volcanic spires, bushwalks and wildlife by day, and seriously dark, starry skies by night. Spend the day walking, then stay out for the sunset and the Milky Way.

Siding Spring Observatory

Around 27–28km west of Coonabarabran on the edge of the national park, Siding Spring is Australia's premier optical astronomy research site. Visitors can see the 3.9-metre Anglo-Australian Telescope from its free viewing gallery, explore the hands-on exhibition and grab a coffee at the café. Note that the observatory is closed to the public at night, so plan your visit for the day. Each October long weekend, Star Fest opens up the site for talks with astronomers and a look through telescopes.
